The holidays are nearly upon us and while it's a wonderful time to visit with friends and family, hosting an event is bound to leave you with an overwhelming pile of dirty, greasy dishes. Fear not! We have helpful tips for hand washing your dishes and the dish soap to get the job done right!
Tip 1: Rinse Right Away.
Rinse or wipe off dishes right away. It’s so much easier to do when the food is soft. Wait even a few hours and you will have to use some elbow grease to get the job done.
Tip 2: Hot Water is Key.
Use hot, HOT water. Hot water cleans faster, breaks down grease and helps your dishes dry quickly. Wearing gloves can help you tolerate a higher temperature.
Tip 3: Protect Your Hands.
Wear gloves. As mentioned above, not only will gloves allow you to use hotter water, they will help protect your hands and nails from drying out. And let’s face it…no one especially enjoys the feeling of food and grease in the water.
Tip 4: Soak Overnight.
Soak! For heavily soiled pots and pans, make your life easier and let them soak. Add a few drops of dish soap to the water and wait—even overnight. Everything will loosen and come off much easier. It’s worth the wait!
Tip 5: Wash Order Matters.
Save the dirtiest dishes for last. Wash your dishes in order from the least greasy to the most greasy. Generally, dirty dishes are ranked in the below order from least dirty to grimiest. Drain the sink and use new water if you notice it getting particularly grimy.
1. Cups and glasses
3. Bowls and plates
4. Serving dishes and other greasy items
5. Pots, pans and bakeware
Tip 6: Use a good sized dish rack.
Washing dishes is bad enough, but there is nothing more frustrating than trying to balance a holiday meal’s worth of dishes in a tiny dish rack. Use a sturdy rack that can hold a decent amount at a time.
Bonus Tip 7: Use a soap you love.
Let's face it, doing the dishes is not always a joy. But you can make doing the dishes more enjoyable if you change the environment and mood you do them in! Put on some fun music, try a fun new fragrance and get that positive mindset rolling.
